Barcelona Public Demonstration Photography Class

Today, our Photography Workshop participants were surprised by a public and pacific demonstration of hundreds of people claiming for real democracy in Spain. All kinds of people went out on the streets to express their discomfort about bank speculation, and the result of the recent elections.

Spain does not accept anymore the constant abuse that banks, big corporations and private capital realtors make over the population.

Later on the police would take by brutal force demonstrators from Plaça Catalunya, Barcelona´s main square,  beating them and using gas and brutality to stop them from expressing their discomfort.

Picturing urban Portraits

skaters, portraits, secrets, tourists, and all the diversity of the Raval on a Saturday morning. The purpose was to be able to get in touch with people and get them to pose for urban portraits. Many times it is hard for us asking people to pose for us , because we imagine they will get mad or be nasty, but that is not always true. Urban Portrait is one of the mos fascinating experiences during urban explorations. Faces and people tell us a lot a bout cities and the local life in every place.

This group enjoyed breaking the fear to get in touch with people and understood ways and techniques to approach and deal with spontaneous portraits.

Barcelona´s Urban Magic

one of the nicest things about living in this city is that you never stop discovering places. people and situations. There is always a new story around the corner a new anecdote to recall , a new building to say wow about. And when it is not about that, it is about beautiful things that suddenly happen here. Like a cat wearing a lady hat, 4 rabbits that follow a homeless lady or a romantic couple that hold hands over 80. Street art brings lots of surprises when it invades abandoned or taken buildings and when the summer starts, it is also magic, hot but magic, the new light brings reflections and mirages that make us enjoy.

here a couple of those two.

Discovering a Hidden Roman Temple in Barcelona

Barcelona is with no doubt a city full of surprises. Some of them very evident and some of them very hidden.

One of Barcelona´s more surprising spots is this roman temple we discovered with a very creative group, who were learning about depth of field and other benefits of aperture mode in their cameras.

This was a perfect place to understand light, DOF and how it works. These pictures were made with a mobile phone…cameras were busy learning and enjoying.

A Beautiful Saturday at the Gothic Quarter

The weather last Saturday was strange: from sunshine to rain, clouds and sun again. The afternoon began with a sunny sky filling downtown Barcelona with bright colors and deep shadows.

We met with Mr and Mrs Lemmer in front of the cathedral, they were interested in making better pictures when they travel and finding out some tips to enjoy their camera completely. The Lemmers came from Germany but wanted to practice their Spanish so the conversation switched from german to spanish whenever it was necessary. We started talking about framing architecture, the importance of details and how to make great pictures of whole buildings, façades, and monuments in sunny and cloudy days. The key was finding an interesting angle and shooting the person in front of the building at a very close distance.

We walked around the cathedral and explored Sant Felip Neri´s square and church a peaceful little squared where the film ¨The perfume¨ was shot some years ago. Exploring backlights, flash and angles we went to Plaça St Jaume viting the roman temple and the Plaça del Rei. At the Aragon Kingom Archive building we ejoyed a wonderful new view of the central garden and the fountain and to finish the afternoon ( and avoid a little rain) we visited the Sta maria del Mar church where the Lemmers discovered how important weddings are in Spain and why people overdress to assist.

A wonderful Sunday for all of us…
